SECURITY STANDARDS RELEASED FOR HIPAA
By SWD staff
Security Wire Digest, vol. 5, no. 13, 17 February 2003

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) last week announced the final security standards for protecting electronic health information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.
The security standards go into effect April 21, but most covered entities will have up to two full years to comply with the standards. Small health plan providers have an additional year, if needed.

The new security standards work in concert with privacy regulations approved last year. Health insurers, certain health care providers and health care clearinghouses must establish procedures and mechanisms to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of health information in electronic forms, according to a news release.

"Overall, these national standards required under HIPAA will make it easier and less costly for the health care industry to process health claims and handle other transactions while assuring patients that their information will remain secure and confidential," HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said in a statement. "The security standards in particular will help safeguard confidential health information as the industry increasingly relies on computers for processing health care transactions."
